Lesley Thompson couples therapist

About Lesley Thompson, LMFT

Lesley Thompson is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) providing individual therapy and couples counseling to adults in New York, New Jersey, and Texas, and as a registered telehealth provider in Florida. She brings over two decades of clinical experience, advanced training, and a deeply relational approach to her work with individuals, couples, and families.

Lesley earned her Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from New York University, followed by a Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy from Iona College, where she graduated with honors and received the Department Medal of Honor for both clinical and academic excellence. She went on to complete an intensive three-year post-graduate certificate program in Psychoanalytic/Psychodynamic Therapy, further strengthening her depth-oriented clinical foundation.

In addition to her advanced psychodynamic training, Lesley is a Certified Gottman Method Couples Therapist (Level 2) and a Certified Trauma Therapist, allowing her to integrate evidence-based couples therapy with trauma-informed, emotionally attuned care. Her work blends insight, emotional processing, and practical tools to help clients create meaningful and lasting change.

Before entering private practice, Lesley worked in university counseling centers and community mental health settings, providing therapy to adolescents, adults, couples, and families from diverse racial, cultural, socioeconomic, and spiritual backgrounds. She continues to give back to the community by mentoring young women, offering premarital counseling, and teaching parenting and marriage workshops through a community-based organization.

Lesley is passionate about working with both individuals and couples, and she specializes in helping couples where one or both partners have experienced childhood trauma, attachment wounds, or relational ruptures. She believes therapy should be highly personalized and collaborative, and she tailors her approach to each client’s unique history, goals, and values. Clients often describe her style as empathetic, non-judgmental, grounded, and honest.

Outside of her clinical work, Lesley has been married for over 25 years and is the mother of two adult children. She is also a dancer with Revision Dance Company in Austin, Texas, a creative practice that continues to inform her appreciation for embodiment, expression, and emotional presence.
